‘In 2009 the Royal British Legion  spent over £1 million each week carrying out our work among the serving and ex-Service community.

But for every person we reach, there are many more who are still struggling alone. The demand for our support continues as Service men and women, young and old, call on us for emotional, financial and practical help.

Our target in 2011 is £40 million and we call on the nation to give generously and to wear their poppies with pride.’

This year they will be a host of work shops taking place on the main field from, Ironbridge Gorge Museum Enginuity, Royal Air Force, circus work shop,  birds of prey, Royal British Legion, Robot Wars with K’nex, Telford Model Aero Club, Timmy T inflatable’s and live music from local bands organised by Music Bros (Shrewsbury). We also have delicious food supplied by Super chef BBQ as well as fifty stands on the main field we also have a food and craft fair in the main hall exhibitors from around our local community in Wellington.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and supported the event last year, we hope to see you again this year Saturday 17th September 2011 12pm till 4pm. Our community impacts on all aspects of our lives and we wanted to bring Ercall Wood and our community together to enjoy a fun packed day.

Group Photo Peer Mentors 2011_12

 A team of fifteen peer mentors in year ten have completed three half day training sessions, where we discussed and learnt how to remain non- judgemental in situations along with listening skills and some role play. Confidentiality and communication skills were also discussed during the sessions; nine peer mentors have also decided to continue with the peer mentor role in year 11, to offer continued support for our children going into year eight.. Ercall Wood’s peer mentors will be on hand at the beginning of the academic year when they will be with the new year seven intake for the first day, ensuring that they feel safe in their new surroundings and spending time over lunch and break time with them, should the year seven students feel they need such support. They will remain in contact with the new year sevens by visiting the children on a weekly basis in their form rooms, building friendships and helping to resolve any conflict should it arise.

 A number of the peer mentors this year will be working closely alongside myself offering a structured one to one mentor / mentee relationship within the school. The main objective of the scheme is for the new students to settle in quickly, make good progress and achieve their full potential. A majority of the peer mentors are gifted and talented students who have been trained to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to support year seven students. The mentor will assist the mentee in settling into the schools teaching and learning structure, offer appropriate advice and guidance, help mentees manage time, set personal goals and support individuals who may lack confidence with aspects of school life. A careful selection of matching mentors to mentees takes place to ensure that students are motivated to do well. The one to one scheme for select individuals, will only commence after consent has been given from the year sevens parents/carers and will be in place for an agreed amount of time, this process will be reviewed on a regular basis and monitored under the close supervision of the peer mentor co-ordinator.

 The peer mentoring scheme along with one to one programme this year achieved the nationally approved provider standard accreditation, for our work in offering safe and effective practice in peer mentoring. The one to one programme continues to exceed our expectations enabling us to continue our work with students moving from year seven into year eight. The Friends of Ercall Wood meets every six to eight weeks at the school, Please see the school web site for further information. Please feel free to come along and join us. We welcome any new ideas for fund-raising and you will be made most welcome.

We are always looking for volunteers for events. It doesn’t matter if you’re not able to help on a regular basis, or even if you can’t come into school. You can also help by letting us know if you have any contacts or skills we could use – anything you can offer is very valuable to us.

The welcoming, family-friendly environment of our school is a combination of all who contribute to the school: the staff, parents and the wider community. The contribution that the Friends of Ercall Wood makes is testament to their enthusiasm and commitment to support the school’s key goals, and to provide our children with that little bit extra that makes our school special.

Year 8 Ercall Wood Students

Rachel Phillips from Telford, has her sights set on a successful career in horticulture, and has reached the final stage of a national competition to search for designers of the future.

The competition, which is part of the Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship (CBMS), sponsored by Bradstone, will reward one promising designer with a 12 month vocational scholarship created by the award winning garden designer and TV presenter.

Competing against 10 other aspiring finalists, Rachel has been assessed over the last five months by the CBMS team whilst working on her ‘Atom’-themed ‘Budding Scientists’ garden, which is being unveiled at the prestigious Malvern Spring Gardening Show (12 – 15 May 2011).

Year 8 students from Ercall Wood Technology College in Telford and Wrekin, have been growing plants, making bug boxes and working with Pablo Productions to design the learning pod shelter, complete with its green roof.

Rachel’s garden will be judged by a panel comprising Chris Beardshaw, Biddy Bolsover from Aggregate Industries and Elizabeth Banks, President of the Royal Horticultural Society, who will visit all CBMS show gardens before choosing the next scholar

Rachel said: “My love of plants started when I was a little girl watching my grand-dad grow tomatoes on the veranda. I enjoy the sense of achievement associated with nurturing a seed to maturity or watching a garden take shape. I have discovered the difference between doing a job that I like, and the fulfilment to be gained by doing a job that I love.

The CBMS provides garden designers with a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m extremely excited to have reached this stage of the competition. I can’t wait to see my finished design at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show, and find out whether I’m the successful scholar!

I really appreciate the help I’ve had from the Ercall Wood students, and I hope they have enjoyed the experience. I have also been working part time with Mike Russell Landscape and Garden Design to gain experience in the industry, and he and his team have been helping me to build my garden too.”

 It took from April 2010 to January 2011, for our scheme, which now included our one to one programme to feel ready to be put under the spotlight, after many hours of hard work from myself and the Peer Mentors, evidencing all the work that was taking place we contacted the foundation and requested an assessment date, which took place on February 16^th. The assessment was held at school and involved both Peer Mentors and Mentees being interviewed by independent assessors, and the scheme as a whole being scrutinised by them. The result was that Ercall Wood achieved outstanding in every one of the twelve elements and was provided with National Recognition from MABF, for the work that the scheme had evidenced. We are one of the first schools in Shropshire to achieve such an award.

 I personally would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the Peer Mentors both past and present for enabling this scheme to be such a success, without all your hard work and commitment we would not be where we are today. And on a personal note I would like to thank the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation for all the extra help and guidance which has enabled me to take the Peer Mentoring Scheme to the next level. Watch this space our aim is to go higher.
